Why is it important to set up the IP address correctly?

For Clonable to translate and display your website, our servers must be able to "talk" to your original website's server. This connection relies entirely on the Origin IP address configured in your settings.

The role of the Origin IP

Clonable acts as a bridge (a proxy) between your visitors and your original website. When someone visits your Clone, Clonable fetches the content from your original server using its IP address, translates it on the fly, and serves it to the visitor.

If this IP address is incorrect or outdated, the bridge "breaks," and Clonable cannot find the content it needs to display.

IP addresses can sometimes change if you switch hosting providers or if your host moves your site to a different server. If your original site is still working but your clone is down, an IP mismatch is the most likely culprit

How to update your Origin IP

If your server IP has changed, you can update it in just a few clicks:

  1. Log in to your Clonable dashboard.
  2. Select the original site you want to manage.
  3. Click the gear icon to open the Site settings.
  4. Navigate to Advanced Settings.
  5. Look for the Origin server field and enter the correct IP address.
  6. Click Save.

What happens if the IP is incorrect?

If the IP address in your Clonable settings doesn't match your actual server IP, visitors will likely see one of two errors:

  • 502 Bad Gateway: This usually means the IP address is set incorrectly, and Clonable is trying to connect to a server that isn't yours.
  • 504 Gateway Timeout: This often happens if the IP address has changed or if your server is blocking Clonable’s request.

Preventing IP blocking (Whitelisting)

Because Clonable sends a lot of requests to your server to keep the translations up to date, some security systems (like firewalls) might mistakenly flag Clonable as a "bot" or a malicious user and block our IP addresses.

To prevent your clones from going offline, it is crucial to whitelist Clonable's IP addresses in your server's firewall. This tells your server: "These requests are coming from a trusted partner, let them through."
